Join me for what I believe is an opportunity of a lifetime: an immersive experience celebrating crafting from the land in the stunning Åland Islands, with a curated stay at the beautiful Hotel Svala. Class schedule is as follows:
Appalachian Broom Making at Hotel Svala Workshop Schedule
Overview
This workshop introduces the foundations of traditional Appalachian broom making while leaving space for experimentation, practice, and time outdoors. Mornings focus on learning new techniques and understanding the materials; afternoons are open studio time for practice with traditional and found materials, exploration, and walks in the surrounding landscape.
Students will leave with several completed brooms and the skills needed to continue the craft at home.
Daily Rhythm
Morning (9:00–12:30): Technique, demonstrations, and structured learning
Lunch + Rest
Afternoon Studio (1:30–5:00): Practice, experimentation, and optional walks
Day 1 — Introduction to the Craft
Afternoon
- Welcome and introductions
- An overview of Appalachian broom making
- Introduction to materials
- Foundational moves: beginning a simple hand whisk broom
A brief break
Tying whisks in the landscape: playing with the basics
Day 2 — Full Sweeps
Morning and Afternoon Studio
- Sorting and soaking: material preparation
- Handle selection and preparation
- Weaving an Appalachian-style full sweep, and, if time allows, a cobwebber
- Exploration as time permits
This will be the fullest and most challenging day of the course.
Day 3 — Shaping & Stitching
Morning
- Flat stitching and round stitching
Afternoon Studio
- Making a turkey wing
- Experimenting with techniques using found or traditional materials
Day 4
Morning
- Rooster tails and advanced techniques
- Woven tops
Afternoon Studio
- Continue stitching and shaping brooms
Day 5
Morning
- Review and taking it home
